I have observed an unusual phenomenon: when the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model is combined with linear surface-to-surface contact in CalculiX, the model fails to converge. After replacing the linear contact definition with the *Tie constraint, the model runs successfully, yet no plastic zones are developed in the calculation results.
Today I ran a test and found that after activating the *SURFACE INTERACTION keyword (even without defining any corresponding contact pairs), the analysis appears to completely bypass the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model, yielding zero equivalent plastic strain. The Mohr-Coulomb plasticity only works and plastic strain emerges after removing all *SURFACE INTERATION keywords. I would like to clarify whether this is a software bug or a user setup error on my part.
My test files are stored in Google Drive. Pay close attention to the *INCLUDE keyword—this section needs modification. Whenever I add a “Surface interaction” definition, the MC constitutive model gets ignored. I suspect this is a software bug.
With your initial stress you seem to inject a hydrostatic stress state to the entire structure which results in a Mises stress of 0. If the Mises stress is then the yield criteria for the Plastic strain you should consequently expect nothing else than a Plastik strain of 0.
The Mohr-Coulomb and von Mises yield criteria differ fundamentally.Calculation results reveal that simply deleting an irrelevant keyword leads to entirely different computational outputs.
I can reproduce the issue.
It could be related to the use of gapuni elements. The same thing happens if you replace the vertical displacement constraint with a compression-only support in a model that previously worked.
I am not entirely certain about the exact cause, yet my test results demonstrate that the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model is disregarded and the material behaves as linear elasticity once the *SURFACE INTERACTION keyword is specified, regardless of whether contact elements exist in the model. This occurs even though I have not defined any contact pairs and no contact elements are created accordingly. Therefore, I suspect there may be some interference with the material definition.

I’ve been carrying out debugging work lately, but WSL2 suddenly malfunctioned, drastically slowing down all my operations. ![]()
I have analyzed the calinput.f file and compared the keyword reading sequence for the plastic constitutive model.
For the plastic model, the keywords are read in the order: *material → *plastic → *surfaceinteraction.
In contrast, the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model follows a different reading sequence: *material → *surfaceinteraction → *mohr-coulomb.
I modified the readinpt.c source file, which appears to resolve the read conflict between the *surfaceinteraction and *mohr-coulomb keywords. The Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model is now properly activated when contact interfaces are defined.
